Victoria Park Golf Club

Victoria Park East Golf Club has been a part of the community since 1974. The 18-hole, 6500-yard par 71 layout is considered one of the most challenging in the area, and with recent improvements to the sand traps, irrigation system and par-3 water holes, the condition of the golf course can be described as “spectacular”.

The 136-acre property that is now Victoria Park East was a country retreat for the Hales family. Alf Hales was a long-time, popular Member of Parliament for the Wellington riding from the mid-1950s until 1972. Across the road, Ted DeCorso built Victoria Park Golf Club in 1967 (later to be called Victoria Park West), and when the Hales property came up for sale in 1971, Ted and his brothers Carmine and Angelo conceived a plan to purchase the property and build a larger golf course – one that would be unique to the area. Golf course architect Rene Muylaert provided the plan, and construction began in 1972. Clever use of the “dog-leg” design and water hazards highlight the layout, and Victoria Park East officially opened in July 1974. Brothers Ted, Carmine and Angelo were all very much involved: Ted handled the business management, Carmine was the course superintendent; and Angelo, already a CPGA Professional, took over the running of the golf operation.

For three years, the club operated out of a temporary building: actually, the Hales Family Cottage, which was moved from its original location near the 17th green. In 1977 a clubhouse was built, and in keeping with the goal to build something unique, the building was designed to offer a panoramic view of the golf course from the upper-floor banquet hall. Additions included a permanent Pro Shop in 1982 (to replace the Cottage), and a major Clubhouse expansion in 1999 to coincide with the 25th Anniversary of Victoria Park East.

The golf course has matured and improved tremendously over the years. The greens and tees are comparable to any older and well-established private clubs… some say better! Fairways are contour-cut and there is a “first cut” of rough around most of them. Sand traps are a notable challenge at Victoria Park East, and all are now filled with white “Ohio” sand. A series of cart-paths and naturalized areas help ensure that peak conditions are maintained.

Victoria Park East Golf Club continues to be fully owned and operated by the DeCorso family. David DeCorso – Ted’s son – is now the General Manager and Superintendent; Carmine’s son John is the Clubhouse Manager and daughter Louise is the Office Manager. Carmine continues to be active in the running of the Club. Angelo and his wife Bonnie retired in 2000.
